Welcome to Real-Time Next Bus, TransLink's new service to bring dynamic bus information
to you, our customers. We're currently in the Beta stage of development, and appreciate
your patience as we work through the kinks. We'll be incrementally rolling out functionality,
and welcome any input our customers have.
Device Support
Initially, we're focusing our support on the devices our customers use the most
(iPhone and Android 2.3). Once we've completed the rest of our planned functionality
enhancements, focus will shift to supporting other devices, such as Blackberry and
the Windows phone.
Current Features
Users can search by 5-digit stop number or by route, and have the information displayed
in text-only format, or on our interactive map. Customers who have GPS-enabled phones
can click on the "Get current GPS location" link – your current coordinates will
appear in the search field, and from there you can click on either the Map or Text
view buttons.
On the map, bus stops are noted by a "T" symbol, and stops can only be seen at specific
zoom levels in order to reduce map clutter. If you're using the map, you can access
next-bus information for any bus stop by clicking on the stop itself ("T" symbol),
even if that's not the stop you initially searched for. Click on any bus route number
in a next bus bubble to have that bus’ route display on the map. Your selected stop
and next bus times will remain open.
Our newest update is real-time predictive departures. Using GPS location devices
installed on our buses, we can now predict when a bus will actually leave your stop,
versus when it's scheduled to depart. If a bus is predicted to leave your selected
stop within the next two minutes, the time will display as "Du". Click the "more
info" link in a bus stop bubble to see the scheduled next bus times for routes that
are not servicing your chosen stop with the next 24 hours.
When searching by route, the primary path for that bus route will display as a blue
line. Some routes have multiple different paths, so don't be alarmed if you see
a bus off the route! When you click on a bus, the path that particular bus is on
will turn orange, any other bus driving that path (in the same direction) will become
orange, and any stop serviced by that path will also turn orange. The primary path,
as well as any buses or stops not using/servicing the path you've selected, will
remain blue (orange paths are layered on top of the primary blue path).
Check out the example below using the #16 route. The primary path is blue, and the
particular path chosen is displayed in orange. Bus stops that this path serves are
also orange. The blue bus sitting on the orange path is travelling in the opposite
direction of the selected orange bus.
We've also added a new navigation menu at the top of the map and text view pages.
Use the links in the menu to jump from map view to text view, access favourites,
perform a new search, or head back to the main page.
By clicking on the favourites button in this new navigation menu, you can easily
add a route or stop to your favourites, edit your favourites, quickly access your
most recently saved favourites, or jump to see all your saved favourites. The favourites
limit is 100, working on a first in/first our basis. There’s a 256 character limit
for favourites renaming.
Note: Real-Time information is currently unavailable for West Van Blue Bus, New Westminster
Community Shuttles, Langley Community Shuttles and Tsawwassen First Nation Community
Shuttles. Scheduled Next Bus times are still available for these services.
What's Next
There are lots of new features we plan on introducing as this project evolves. We'll
be increasing map functionality, addressing accessibility issues and expanding device
support.
Known Issues
Since we're still in Beta, you might experience a few bugs with the system. Our
project team is aware of many of the known issues, and is prioritizing them for
resolution once we've completed the bulk of the features and functionality and shift
our focus to enhanced device support. If you discover a bug that you'd like to report,
please let us know by filling out our Feedback Form.
